St Alphonsus Rodriguez
Feast day – 31st October
On the 31st of October every year, the Catholic Church
celebrates the feast of St Alphonsus Rodriguez. He was born on July 25th, 1533,
in Spain. His father was a wealthy wool merchant. In 1556, when he was 23 years
old, he married Maria Suarez, and they had three children, but after some
years, both his wife and children died.
After the tragic death of his family, when he was 38 years
old, he joined the Jesuits in the year 1571. He took his first vows on April
5th, 1573. Since he was 40 years old when he joined the Jesuits, his provincial
asked him to accept being a brother. He was a humble saint, and he met two more
Jesuit saints in his life.
When he was young, St Peter Faber, another Jesuit saint,
visited the house of St Alphonsus Rodriguez and prepared him to receive his
First Holy Communion. Then he met another Jesuit saint called St Peter Claver.
St Alphonsus was a friend and guide to St Peter Claver when he was studying in
college. St Alphonsus also encouraged him to go as a missionary to Africa and
work among the slaves.
St Alphonsus worked as a doorkeeper of a Jesuit college for
44 years. His humility and simple life teach us to be humble and committed to
our work and mission. We can give glory to God not only in big works but also
in the small works of everyday life.
He died on October 31st, 1617, in Palma, Majorca. He was
beatified in the year 1825 by Pope Leo XII. Then he was canonized on January
15th, 1888, by Pope Leo XIII, together with St Peter Claver, who was a friend
of St Alphonsus Rodriguez.
