The Greatest Missionary after St Paul
(St Francis Xavier)
Feast day – 3 December
Patron Saint of Missions
"What does it profit a man to win the whole world and lose his life"
(Mt 16:26)
St Francis Xavier is recognised as the greatest missionary of the church after St Paul, the greatest of all missionaries. St Francis Xavier was a Jesuit who came to India to preach Christ. He is the patron saint of all missionaries. He is also one of the founding members of the Society of Jesus.
St Francis Xavier was born on April 7, 1506, in Navarre, Spain. He was born into the well-known Xavier family of Navarre. He received all his early education in Navarre. When he was 19 years old, in September 1525, Francis went to Paris for his higher studies. In the University there, he was assigned to share the room with St Peter Faber and St Ignatius of Loyola. St Francis Xavier was an excellent student and aspired to a worldly career. He was not interested in becoming a priest. He successfully completed his studies and received his postgraduate degree in Humanities in 1530.
In 1533, the third roommate, St Peter Faber, went to visit his family and St Francis was left alone to share the room with St Ignatius of Loyola. During that time, St Ignatius slowly guided St Francis and influenced him to offer his life to God. Ignatius often reminded Francis of the words of Jesus, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” (Mt 16:26). Eventually, these words of Jesus touched Francis so deeply that he surrendered his life completely to God.
By the end of their studies in Paris, St Ignatius and St Francis were able to gather eight more companions from the university, who wished to serve Jesus and live for Him. In 1534, both Ignatius and Francis began their theology studies and were ordained priests together in the year 1537. All ten companions wanted to go to Jerusalem and preach the Gospel and win over the Turks. So, they waited for a ship in Venice. As their departure was delayed, they all worked in hospitals, taught catechism to the children in the streets, and carried out priestly ministries.
Since the ship never left for Jerusalem, the companions decided to send St Ignatius to Rome to place the entire group at the disposal of the Pope, willing and ready to go anywhere the Pope wished. While St Ignatius was in Rome, Pope Paul III asked him to send two priests to India. St Ignatius chose Fr Simon Rodrigues SJ and Fr Nicholas Bobadilla SJ. But Simon Rodrigues fell sick and was unable to travel. In that situation, St Ignatius asked his best friend, St Francis Xavier, to go to India. St Francis agreed, and St Ignatius said to him, “Go, set the world on fire.” St Ignatius knew that he would never see his best friend again, yet he still chose him to go to India.
On April 7, 1541, St Francis began his journey by ship. It took him 13 months to reach India. After reaching India with the help of some Spanish friends, he began preaching the Gospel and visiting prisons and hospitals. He learnt to speak in Tamil to preach to the people. Each day he walked several kilometres to preach the Gospel, baptise people, and instruct them in the catechism of the Catholic Church. Francis is known to have baptised more than 30,000 people in India. Francis made an effort to learn many local languages, but it was difficult for him as he was also the mission superior of the Jesuits in India. Though he could not speak some languages, he always took a translator.
He proceeded further East and went to Malacca, where he learnt about a Japanese nobleman who wanted to become a Christian. So, on June 24, 1549, he landed in Kagoshima in southern Japan. He tried hard to convert the emperor of Japan, but the opposition from the royal court was intense and he had to leave the place. On December 17, a ship anchored at Sancian Island. As St Francis looked over the ship towards China, he felt that the country was calling him.
In April 1552, desiring to travel to China, he landed on Sancian Island. It was a place for Chinese smugglers and Portuguese traders. But no pirate was willing to take the risk of transporting a Jesuit missionary to mainland China. As St Francis waited for a ship, he fell sick with fever. Seven days later, his fever grew worse, and he went into a coma. On December 1st, he regained consciousness and spent his remaining time in prayer. On the morning of December 3rd, he finally surrendered his soul to God.
St Francis died on Sancian Island. It was difficult to take his body back to India. Therefore, his disciples poured lime into the coffin, thinking, later they would carry only the bones. But the lime did not affect the flesh of St Francis Xavier. So, they brought his body back to Goa and kept it in the Church of Bom Jesus and to this day the body is preserved in this church in Goa.
St Francis Xavier was beatified on 25 October 1619 by Pope Paul V and canonised on 12 March 1622 by Pope Gregory XV, on the same day as St Ignatius of Loyola. In 1927, he was proclaimed the Patron Saint of the Missions.
Inspiration
A Heart for Service – He travelled long distances to preach the Gospel to the people.
Courage to Follow God’s Call – He left his comfortable life to serve in distant lands. He was not afraid to go to India, Japan, and China. He always trusted in God.
Love for the Poor – He lived among the poor, cared for the sick, comforted the suffering, and taught catechism to children in the streets. He saw Christ in the poor and the suffering.
Deep Trust in God – Even in danger or loneliness, he trusted that God was with him.
St Francis Xavier, pray for us
