St Stanislaus
Kostka
Feast Day: 13 November
Patron of students, Jesuit novices and Poland
“I want eternity. I
was born for greater things.”
- St Stanislaus Kostka
St Stanislaus Kostka was a Jesuit
novice when he died, and he is known for his youthful holiness and
determination to follow God’s call. He was born in 1550 in Poland into a noble
family. His father held a political office, and his mother came from a strong
Catholic family. From a young age, Stanislaus was drawn to God and to prayer.
When he was fourteen years old, he and his elder brother went to a Jesuit
college in Vienna. There, Stanislaus used to rise early, go for Mass, pray the
rosary, and seek union with God in everyday tasks.
While staying in Vienna, St
Stanislaus became seriously ill and thought that we would die. The owner of the
house, where he was staying, was a Protestant and forbade a priest from
bringing him the Holy Communion to St Stanislaus. In his suffering, he prayed
to St. Barbara, and according to his spiritual journal, St. Barbara brought him
the Holy Communion along with angels. Later, he had another vision of the
Blessed Virgin Mary appearing to him and placing the Child Jesus in his arms.
This was a sign for him to join the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
His family opposed his wish to
join the Jesuits, but he did not give up. On August 10, 1567, he disguised
himself as a pilgrim and walked more than 1600 km to join the Jesuits. In
October 1567, he reached Rome, and at the age of seventeen, he was accepted as
a novice in the Jesuit Order. He lived less than a year as a Jesuit novice, but
his life was marked by humility, service, prayer, and a great love for God. In
the novitiate, he did even the lowest chores cheerfully and kept his eyes fixed
on God.
On August 14th, he
fell sick greatly, and he knew he was going to die. On the morning of August
15th, on the feast of Our Lady of the Assumption, he said that Mother Mary was
coming with angels to take him to heaven. Then shortly afterwards, he breathed
his last.
He was beatified by Pope Paul V
in 1605 and was canonised by Pope Benedict XIII on 31st December
1726. Later, Pope Benedict XIII declared him as the patron saint of students,
seminarians and Poland.
Inspiration
- The
life of St Stanislaus Kostka teaches us that holiness is not about age,
wealth or power. It is in doing the small things with extraordinary love
and commitment.
- He
often said, “I want eternity. I am born for greater
things.” This motivated him all his life. His gaze was always fixed
on Jesus. He also had great love for the Eucharist and Mother Mary.
- He
was a man of great zeal and commitment. He walked more than 1600 Km to
achieve his dream. It was able to do it because he trusted God and knew
that God always walked with him. When we lose interest or get discouraged
when life becomes difficult, let us not be discouraged or lose hope. Let
this saint be our inspiration to trust in God always.
- Let
us learn to place our hope and trust in God alone and not in worldly.
Nothing in this world is certain except the love of God. God will never
abandon us if we place our trust in Him.
Prayer of St
Stanislaus Kostka to Mother Mary
I offer You, O my
tender Mother, my work and my sorrows, my spirit and my heart; deign to accept
this feeble homage of my respect and love for You, and to offer it to Jesus
Christ Your divine Son and my Saviour.
St Stanislaus
Kostka, pray for us.
